Or pick a state

Each state link below leads to 5 trade-specific licensing guides for that state. Compare across trades at a glance.

Why this matters

Contractor licensing is the single most-misunderstood part of running a trade business. The penalties for working unlicensed range from fines (Pennsylvania's $1,000/violation) to misdemeanor charges (North Carolina) to felony exposure on repeat offenses. Beyond penalties, unlicensed contracts are unenforceable — meaning customers can refuse to pay and your only recourse is small claims.

The flip side: states with no specific license for your trade (Texas roofing, New York HVAC, Pennsylvania plumbing) often have local rules that catch people. "No state license" rarely means "no rules." This guide covers both: where the state license is the gating requirement, and where local cities or federal certifications (EPA Section 608, EPA RRP, OSHA 30) carry the real weight.

How to use these guides

  1. Pick your trade × state page. Read the quick summary box first — it shows whether you need a state license and the headline costs.
  2. Match the right license class to the largest project you plan to bid. Going lower than scope = fast license suspension when you exceed it.
  3. Budget the full first-year cost — application, license, bond, insurance, CE. The application fee is usually the smallest piece.
  4. Use the reciprocity table if you operate regionally. Some states (Texas with 12 reciprocal partners) are very friendly; others (Michigan, NYC) require fresh applications even with decades of out-of-state experience.
  5. Read the common gotchas. Most license issues come from things state boards don't advertise — apprentice registration, EPA add-ons, local-on-top-of-state requirements.
