- What's the difference between markup and margin?
- Markup is added to cost (cost × markup% = profit added). Margin is taken from the sale price (sale × margin% = profit). A 30% markup on a $100 cost yields a $130 sale — but that's only a 23% margin. Most contractors confuse the two and underprice; the markup-vs-margin calculator at /tools/markup-vs-margin shows the conversion explicitly.
